Industrial Chemistry

Industrial Chemistry and Chemistry are two distinct undergraduate programmes that are offered in the Department of Chemical Sciences, Faculty of Science, Dennis Osadebay University, Asaba. The Department presently runs two degree programmes, a four years B.Sc (Honours) degree programme in Chemistry and a four years B.Sc (Honours) degree programme in Industrial Chemistry; with the introduction of an additional four years B.Sc (Honours) degree programme in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Dennis Osadebay University, Asaba was founded in 2021 with the immediate take off of the two programmes, Chemistry and Industrial Chemistry. The programme is established to prepare students adequately in the field of Chemistry and Industrial Chemistry respectively, so as to produce graduates of the right quality in these areas of expertise. The title of the degree programmes shall be Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Chemistry and Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Industrial Chemistry. Philosophy of The Programmes Industrial Chemistry (B.Sc) Industrial Chemistry is the index of industrial development everywhere in the world. The frontiers of chemistry are very large, ranging from one extreme of natural products to those synthesized by man. The enormous strides made by man in the understanding, exploitation of nature and synthesis of new products all have their roots in Chemistry and Chemical technology. For economic sustenance and technological breakthrough, the undergraduate programme is designed to encompass an appreciation of the centrality of chemical sciences in the entire undergraduate curricular. The programme is designed to equip students for employment in virtually all types of industries. Consequently, a lot emphasis is placed on practical work and industrial training during the course of the programme. The programme is also planned to arouse entrepreneurial spirits needed for self-employment and economic emancipation. Chemistry (B.Sc) Chemistry is the index of industrial development. The giant strides made by man in the understanding and exploitation of nature, synthesis of new materials essential to the enhancement of the quality of life, and the surge in and sustenance of economic and technological progress have benefited immensely from Chemistry. A degree programme in Chemistry should foster in the undergraduate an appreciation of the centrality of chemical science to human well-being, as well as its inevitable linkage to, and interactions with, other branches of science.
